Zungeru Hydro Plant
The following section, will cover industrial sector projects such as the Badagry Port/Lekki Free Trade Zone (Lagos State), Ajaokuta Steel (Kogi State), Idu Industrial Park (FCT), Mambilla Power Plant (Taraba State), Zungeru Power Plant (Niger State), Neimeth Industrial Complex (Anambra State), Ogidigben Gas City/Warri Industrial Park (Delta State), Onne Free Trade Zone (Rivers State) and the General Electric Manufacturing Zone (Cross River State). This blog however, will of course not be limited to these developments.
The first entry of this blog, is the 700 MW Zungeru power plant, currently under construction in Niger State. The hydro-electric development is situated, at the banks of the Kaduna River. Similar to most of the dams being constructed in Nigeria presently; it is multipurpose. Zungeru will generate electricity, provide flood protection, irrigation and water supply.
Installed Units: 4 X 175 MW
Weir Section Technology: Roller Compacted Concrete (Weir Section) - 180 cubic meters
River Bank Technology: Clay Core, Earth Rock - 305 Articles
Height: 90 Metres
Weir Length: 1090 Metres
Total Length: 2499 Metres
To, put this development into the context of Nigerian Hydro. Kainji has an installed capacity of 760 MW, Shiroro has an installed capacity of 600 MW and Jebba has an installed capacity of 540 MW.
Zungeru, is the second largest hydro power plant, being developed by the Nigerian Government. Mambilla (3050 MW) is the largest. It should be noted, that with the privatization of the Nigerian Power Sector, Hydro electricity is one of the areas in which the Federal Government, has however decided to retain large amounts of involvement.
The project is being developed by Chinese contractors and recent works, has involved the construction of a concrete diversion channel, as well as the ongoing production of aggregate on-site. The aggregate systems have being installed on both the left and right banks.
These works are shown with the images to the left (About a month old).
